In our communities, black Americans face many health disparities, including higher uninsured rates, worse health outcomes, and barriers to healthcare access. Black people are more likely than white people to have high blood pressure, diabetes, and HIV. They are also more likely to have high blood pressure that is not well-controlled by medication, and more likely to die from diabetes. In our community it is important we know the facts and take measures to save lives.

  • Blacks are 60% more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes and pre diabetic by a physician.
  • Black Americans are 54% more likely to die of heart disease than white Americans, despite a substantial overall reduction in cardiovascular disease mortality nationwide.
  • In America 41%of black people have high blood pressure, as compared to 27% of white people.
  • Diabetes prevalence was higher among blacks (30%) and Hispanics (26.7%) compared to whites (18%), with the vast majority of all groups having Type 2 diabetes.
  • Stroke is present in 0.7% of blacks aged 18-34 compared to 0.4% of whites the same age. Stroke is common in 2% of black Americans compared to 1% of whites aged 35-49 and 7% vs. 4%, respectively, in those aged 50-64.
  • Blacks are 30% more likely to die from heart disease than non-Hispanic whites. Although black American adults are 30% more likely to have high blood pressure, they are less likely than non-Hispanic whites to have their blood pressure under control.
